The First Lesson

So what might you expect on your first lesson?

Senior Instructor James Stevens gives an insight into what a typical first session might look like

What's it going to be like?

As you first enter you'll be "meeted and greeted" by our friendly team here at FIMA. We'll introduce ourselves and will kindly ask you to sign in by writing your name down on our class registration. You will then be asked if you have any previous martial arts experience and whether we need to know about any significant injuries you may have.

You will then be shown around including the changing rooms where you can leave your bags, shoes etc, and then be guided into the dojo area where training takes place. Here you will be talked through a brief description of how training takes place. The training space is one big open area,  so everyone can be seen. The instructors will typically ask if you have any questions or concerns at this point before the class begins.

As the training session begins, we all bow to each other, students to the instructor and the instructor to the students which we do this as a form of greeting and respect to each other. Although all sessions are varied, we starting every session with a warm up which can consist of cardio, strength and stretching exercises, typically lasting for 10 - 15 minutes.

From there we go through our drills and core movements including punches, kicks, and combinations. This can be done on your own or with a partner of similar age and ability. We may also do these using equipment like our hanging punch bags or smaller kick shields. You will be guided by the instructor at all times and helped if and when needed.

Our class finishes with a cool down drill which varies from light jogging to cardio and strength exercises. We always finish with a light stretch.

Just before the end of the class, we will bow out, giving our respect to each other and a way of saying thank you for our training session.

At the end of the class, you will be asked how you felt your taster session went and if you have and questions. We are always happy to assist you any way we can.

Our classes have an upbeat and enthusiastic atmosphere and we like to have fun along the way.
